最近因為要回去上全天班了。開始要為兒子找一些新的課後活動。
之前其實每天放學也都有活動的。週一西洋棋。週二吉他課。週一跟週三晚間打英式橄欖球。週四歌舞社。週五是他自己決定的, 一定要去海灘。
但是因為回去上班後就沒有辦法三點接他下課﹐所以他的活動都要重新規劃。
我在想最近新的學期報告中老師提到兒子的美術的確有天份﹐所以我想那該給他多機會正式去學﹐而不是只跟著我在家裡塗鴨。
一般的兒童美術班又是一堆小孩﹐兒子去了只會玩鬧﹐所以我就上craigslist去貼找老師的廣告。
我的廣告說:

誠徵美術家教 我們要幫10歲的兒子找一個每個禮拜來一次3個小時的美術家教。 可以是美術專科的學生或是業餘藝術家。 我們兒子在構圖跟色彩上有一點小小的天份。最主要的是他一直都很有興趣畫。 我們希望他能有機會接觸一些較正規的美術訓練﹐或者您也可以幫他設計一些活動。 包括素描﹐水彩﹐油畫﹐攝影﹐參觀美術館或畫廊﹐ 或者就坐下來讀一本關於某個畫家的書﹐探討這個畫家的畫風。 您如果對小孩的美學啟蒙很有興趣﹐請回信給我們。 也許您可以讓這個小孩對塗鴨這樣一個單純的樂趣﹐轉化成對他影響更大的事。

我大概晚間九點貼上網﹐到當晚十二點就接到不下十封的回信。有不少是學校裡正職的美術老師。果然時機真的很不好﹐什麼工作都有一堆人在找。
其中有一封是一個大二的女孩子來的信﹐讓我感慨很深。
她的信是這樣說的:

親愛的 Lorelai, 我的名字叫 Kjersten﹐我相信我就是您們要找的人。我現就讀於Cuyamaca 大學的美術設計科。今年20 歲﹐是威斯康辛州人。 從我有記憶以來我就是一直畫個不停的人。我的祖母是威斯康辛Milwaukee美術館的教育專員。我的爸媽從小就讓我在週末跟暑假上畫畫課。小時候我的祖母有好多好多的色筆﹐她總是非常的鼓勵我表現我的創意。等我稍長﹐我在班上的美術課就一直很特出﹐所以我主動爭取去上暑期的美術學校。 在高中的時候﹐我就己經得到去修大學美術學分的資格﹐而且十分的享受在畫室裡用功的每一分鐘。一點都不覺辛苦。我的美術老師很早就教我使用油畫畫材的訣竅﹐以及水彩﹐塑料等每一種畫材的應用。學校裡更是鼓勵我們充份嘗試每一種專業用的畫材和技巧。 一直到現在我上大學了﹐雖然唸的是應用美術﹐但是我對純美術的愛好仍然不減。一有閒暇﹐我會就去參加一個當地的集團創作活動。如果我的姪女來訪﹐我也總會鼓勵她們坐下來跟我一起畫畫。 我非常有興趣能夠有機會來鼓勵並啟發一個小孩對藝術的熱愛。 基於我目前的課表﹐我只能在週六跟週日來幫忙。 我希望能得到妳的回音。也謝謝您花時間讀我的信。

為什麼這封信讓我很感動呢? 先不管她的文筆多好﹐就先看這個小女生的動機有多強。
我的廣告是晚間九點貼上去的﹐她的回信是在三個小時之後就來了。這是一個二十歲的小女生﹐在異地唸書。她課修得很滿﹐表示想及早畢業的打算很強。但是也因為課滿﹐沒有辦法像大部分的大學生到星巴克去打工。然而一般學生打工打得兇其實畢業的動機也不強﹐大學晃個五六年的小孩多得是。
所以這個女孩看到一個她可以的工作機會﹐在兩三佪個鐘頭之內馬上寫了一封﹐以雇主的角度﹐我可以說是一封滿分的 Cover Letter求職信。
如果有在美國找過工作的人﹐就知道沒有附上求職信Cover Letter﹐光是丟履歷表是沒有人會找你面試的。
在求職信裡﹐你要陳述為什麼你想要申請這個工作﹐為什麼你會是理想的候選人。口氣要正式而且專業。也不能過份客氣卑微。
要寫好一封求職信﹐不要說是一個二十歲的小女生﹐連三四十歲的經理人都還是會很頭痛﹐要至少想個半天的。所以每個求職網站上最大的連結就是教你怎麼寫好 Cover Letter。 到 Google 一估﹐也可以看到成千上萬的網站要收錢幫你寫 Cover Letter 的。
所以說我真的好佩服這個小女生﹐她的求職信口氣專業又不失熱情。最厲害的在是﹐我短短的徵人啟示中提到的每一個點﹐她都有著墨到。
第一個她強調她對藝術天生從小就有的熱情﹐這是我廣告裡沒有明說但是我要的﹐因為是要為小孩的興趣啟蒙。這個她看懂了。
然後她強調她也具有純美術的基礎畫工﹐雖然她現在主修美術設計。
最後﹐她提出她會找小姪女畫畫的事﹐來強調她也有經驗可以教小孩畫畫。
我在公司裡也有過幾次要去面試新招的工程師﹐說真的有太多三四十歲的大人都還寫不出這麼直追重點的求職信。
其他的來信中﹐雖然好多現任的美術老師﹐他們的來信就是"你好我是XXX﹐是現任美術老師﹐我想我可以幫你的忙﹐請跟我連絡"。這樣就結束了。
看這麼有熱情有動機的小孩﹐我都會覺得雖然她可以提供的時間﹐不是我原來計劃的﹐我也會想變更我的計劃讓她至少每兩周來一次。
她給我的感動﹐是就算不缺人我都想開個缺給她來上班。
現在要找工作﹐就真的要有這種衝勁了﹗
我找媳婦的話﹐也是一定要找這一型的啦﹗不過十年計劃實在太遠﹐不曉得Kjersten願不願意作我兒子的袋咪魔兒呢?

My name is Kjersten and I may be just what you're looking for. I am a graphic design student at Cuyamaca College. I am a 20 college student from Wisconsin.
I have been drawing and creating since before I can remember. My grandmother was a docent at the Milwaukee Art Museum in Wisconsin and through her my parents enrolled me in art classes on Sundays and during the summer. My grandmother had the largest collection of colored pencils and also encourage any creativity I expressed. As I grew older I excelled in my art classes through school and took it upon my self to take summer school art courses. I had the great opportunity to study at college level courses while still in high school and savored the hours I spent in studio. My art teachers exposed us to the tricky techniques of oils early on as well watercolors, acrylics and all drawing tools. We were encouraged to explore beyond the normal techniques and tools of the trade.
Today as a college student I still have that great love for fine art. When I have time I participate in a local art collaborative. When my nephews come to town I encourage them to sit and color with me. I would love the opportunity to encourage and inspire a child's growing interest in the arts. Due to my current class schedule I am currently only available on Saturdays and Sundays.

Art Tutor for 10-yr-old

We are looking for an art major college student or an inspired artist to spend 3-hours once a week with our 10 years old son.
Our son has some talent in drawing and coloring. Most of all, he loves it.
We would like him to have more exposure to formal painting instructions as well as some creative projects that you might have in mind for him.
Sketching, water coloring, oil painting, photography, a trip to an art museum or visit an art gallery, or a day just sitting and reading books to learn about one artist and his artistic style.
Write us if you are interested in spending time to inspire a child. And maybe this simple love of art will grow into something even more profound for him.
